What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a condition where a person might stop breathing for at least ten seconds or more while they are sleeping. This sleep disorder is very serious, which is why you should watch for sleep apnea symptoms and seek treatment as soon as possible if you suspect that there is a problem.

If a person is suffering from sleep apnea, then it is possible that you might stop breathing multiple times during the night. In severe situations, a person might stop breathing hundreds of times in a single night. As a result, the body is lacking in the oxygen that is needed to support optimal health and wellness.

There are two types of sleep apnea:

  • Central Sleep Apnea: With this type of sleep apnea, the airways aren’t physically obstructed, and the brain doesn’t send the right signals to the muscles that control breathing. This type of sleep apnea is caused by problems in the respiratory control area of the brain.
  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea: The most common type of sleep apnea, which is caused when the airway is blocked while sleeping. Usually, the cause is soft tissues located within the back of the throat, which soften when a person falls asleep.
  • Complex Sleep Apnea: A combination of both central and obstructive sleep apnea.
